Main Benefit Of Polypropylene

  • No corrosion: PP tubes can withstand the corrosion of high concentrations of acid and base in a wide range of PH values, ranging from 1 to 14.
  • Wear resistance and no scaling: The inner wall of PP pipe and fittings is smooth and uniform, with small flow resistance and no scaling.
  • Reduce vibration and noise: PP tube has excellent sound insulation performance, can significantly reduce the vibration and noise caused by liquid flow.
  • Anti-freezing-cracking: PP material has excellent elasticity so that the section of pipe and fitting can be expanded together with the liquid of freezing-swelling without bursting.
  • Anti-condensation, less heat loss: PP material is a bad heat conductor, can reduce condensation phenomenon and reduce heat loss.
  • Simple installation: PP tube is light in weight, easy to install and operate, and has weldability.
  • Long service life: the life of PP tube system can reach 50 years under the specified service conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions about Polypropylene Pipe

Polypropylene pipe is a type of plastic pipe made of polypropylene random copolymer, which is a thermoplastic material with good heat and chemical resistance. Polypropylene pipe is used for plumbing and mechanical applications that require high temperature and pressure performance. Polypropylene pipe can be joined by heat fusion, which creates strong and leak-free joints.

PP-R stands for polypropylene random copolymer, which is a type of polypropylene pipe that has good heat and chemical resistance. PP-R is a thermoplastic material that can be molded or joined by heat fusion. PP-R is used for plumbing and hydronic heating systems, as well as industrial applications.

PP-RCT stands for polypropylene random copolymer with modified crystallinity and temperature resistance, which is a type of polypropylene pipe that has improved mechanical properties and higher pressure ratings than PP-R. PP-RCT is a copolymer of propylene and at least one comonomer, where the propylene is more than 50% of the composition.

Some of the advantages of PP-R and PP-RCT pipes over other piping materials are:

  • They are safe for potable water and long-term reliable when certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and NSF/ANSI
  • They are resistant to corrosion, tuberculation, deposits, chlorine, chloramine, and other chemicals
  • They have low thermal conductivity and reduced heat loss
  • They are lightweight and easy to install with heat fusion, which creates strong and leak-free joints
  • They have stable pricing and lower installation costs compared to metallic piping systems
  • They have higher pressure ratings and better mechanical properties than PP-R

PP-R and PP-RCT pipes are usually joined by heat fusion, which is a process that melts the pipe and fitting surfaces together to create a strong and leak-free joint. Heat fusion can be done by using a socket fusion tool, a butt fusion machine, or an electrofusion coupling. PP-R and PP-RCT pipes and fittings are completely compatible with each other, so PP-R pipe can be fused to PP-RCT fittings and vice-versa.

The temperature and pressure ratings of PP-R and PP-RCT pipes depend on the selected wall type or thickness, which are expressed by the dimension ratio (DR) or standard dimension ratio (SDR). Thicker-walled pipes have higher pressure ratings, and thinner-walled pipes have lower pressure ratings. Both PP-R and PP-RCT piping products are rated for continuous operation at 180°F (82°C) temperature. When SDR 9 (or thicker) wall type is selected, these materials are rated for 100 psi at 180°F (690 kPa at 82°C), meeting the requirements of national model plumbing codes. The minimum hydrostatic pressure ratings are typically higher for PP-RCT materials than PP-R materials, due to their improved mechanical properties.

The lifespan of PP-R and PP-RCT pipes depends on the operating conditions, such as pressure, temperature, and chemical exposure. when used under proper pressure and temperature values, the life of PP-R and PP-RCT pipes and fittings is more than 50 years.

Polypropylene pipes have a wide range of applications in various industries and sectors. Some of the common applications are:

  • Potable and food-grade applications: PP pipes are safe for drinking water and food contact, as they are certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and NSF/ANSI 14 standards. They do not affect water quality and taste, and are resistant to algae growth.
  • Hot and cold water distribution: PP pipes can handle high temperature and pressure performance, making them suitable for plumbing and hydronic heating and cooling systems in commercial and residential buildings. They also have low thermal conductivity and reduced heat loss.
  • Gravity sewer systems: PP pipes are resistant to corrosion, deposits, and chemicals, and can be used for gravity sewer lines and stormwater drainage. They are also lightweight and easy to install with heat fusion joints.
  • High purity water: PP pipes can provide high purity water for applications such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, semiconductors, cosmetics, etc. They have low leachability and low extractable organic compounds.
  • Gray water and industrial systems: PP pipes can be used for gray water recycling and reuse, as well as industrial process piping that requires high temperature and chemical resistance. They can also handle corrosive inhibitors and chemicals used in hydronic heating and cooling systems.
  • Chemical drainage systems: PP pipes can be used for chemical drainage systems that require flame retardancy and thermal aging resistance. They are available in purple color for non-potable applications.
  • Snow-melting applications: PP pipes can be used for snow-melting systems that require high temperature and pressure performance. They have low thermal expansion and contraction, and can reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Compressed air systems: PP pipes can be used for compressed air systems that require high pressure ratings and low friction losses. They are resistant to moisture, oil, and grease contamination.

The cost of polypropylene pipes depends on various factors, such as the size, type, wall thickness, pressure rating, and supplier of the pipes.  the Average polypropylene pipe price per foot is between $0.50 - $7.00
